      Blazing 8's
We had a surprise presentation at our Toledo Lottery office on Thursday June 23, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.

When “Tony” (as she likes to be called) walked into the Lottery office, she was prepared to drop off the color copy of her driver’s license and leave. Fortunately for her, that was not her fate.

Lottery officials greeted her warmly, gave her a free Lottery tee shirt, thanked her for coming in and then pulled out the surprise - a giant check for $100,000.

Tony was completely shocked. She began to cry, asking, “Are you sure?” “Really, it’s me?” When she was convinced that the big TPD prize was indeed her fate, she said the money would help to move up her retirement date.

With excitement and a little anxiety, Phillip stood in front of the TV cameras, practically disappearing behind the huge five million dollar check. He handled the media questions with a quiet directness punctuated with a quick wit. He had the whole room laughing. He shared openly, explaining that his winnings will go to help him recover from a long illness and help his close friends. We were privileged to be there to share his big moment.

Ohio Lottery officials asked player David Durham to attend a ceremony where the winner of his TPD drawing would be announced. He graciously declined because he had recently moved to West Virginia and it was too far to come just to receive a t-shirt. At that point the Lottery had to let him in on the secret - the drawing had already occurred, and he was the winner!

David and his wife Nina showed up early on Monday morning with their nine month old boxer in the van and smiles on their faces. The Lottery presented the oversized $100,000 check in front of WDTN TV-2 cameras at the Lottery’s Dayton regional office.

When asked, “What are your plans for your winnings?” they replied, “We are going to donate some money to a group home that is close to their hearts, and this should help them get back to Ohio!”

On Tuesday, April 5, David Loomis and his wife Beth were surprised by the Ohio Lottery, when he was told he had won $150,000.

He thought he had won a drawing for a free hat and a mug, but had no idea about the money, which comes just as his unemployment benefits were set to expire.

Loomis said he lost his job and had hit the deadline for unemployment benefits.

"I just started crying because we never win anything," said Loomis' wife, Beth Loomis.  "This morning I walked the dog and found a dollar and thought 'I guess this might be our lucky day.' I guess it is his lucky day."

The family plans to use the money to pay off bills and possibly for a down payment on a house.

After that, she handed him the coffee mug. Then Allison said, “Oh, just a minute, I brought you something else too.” She pulled out an oversized check, written out to him for $100,000.

After handing the paper back, Ms. Turner asked, “Did you read the paper I had you sign?” Michael replied, “No, my wife does all the reading.”

In turn, Michael handed the paper to his wife. She began crying as she read the words, “Grand Prize Winner of $1,000,000.”
